He is best known for his work on the films Three Men and a Baby (1987), Father of the Bride (1991), and The Santa Clause (1994). Orr began his career in the film industry in the late 1970s, working as an assistant director on various Canadian films. He made his directorial debut in 1983 with the Canadian comedy film, The Last Straw. He then went on to direct the 1987 hit comedy Three Men and a Baby, which was a box office success and became the highest-grossing film of the year. Orr has since directed a number of other films, including Father of the Bride (1991), The Santa Clause (1994), and Stepmom (1998). From 1997 to 1998, Orr had a relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett, who had co-starred with Chevy Chase and Jonathan Taylor Thomas in Man of the House, a film that he directed and wrote the screenplay for. Born in Noranda, Quebec in 1953, he grew up in Toronto, Ontario. He attended the Carleton School of Journalism at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where he became the editor of The Charlatan student newspaper during the 1973–1974 term. Orr then went to the undergraduate film school at York University in Toronto, and in 1977 he became the first Canadian to be accepted as a Director Fellow in the AFI Conservatory of the American Film Institute in Los Angeles.
