Dimitri Azar is a Lebanese-American physician and professor of ophthalmology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the founder and director of the UIC Eye and Ear Infirmary, the largest eye and ear clinic in the United States. Born in 1959 in Beirut, Lebanon, Azar earned his medical degree from the American University of Beirut in 1983. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1988 and a fellowship in cornea and external diseases at the University of Iowa in 1989. Azar has been a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Illinois at Chicago since 1989. He is the founder and director of the UIC Eye and Ear Infirmary, the largest eye and ear clinic in the United States. He is also the director of the UIC Cornea and Refractive Surgery Center and the UIC Laser Vision Center. Azar has authored more than 200 scientific papers and book chapters and has lectured extensively on cornea and refractive surgery. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Senior Achievement Award, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award. Azar is married and has two children. He is an avid traveler and enjoys playing tennis and golf.
